How To Look Put Together in a T-Shirt and Leggings

If you caught my last post on my fall favorites, you’ll know about one of the reasons I’m happy fall is finally here - leggings season! My fall uniform for days when I don't have to get dressed up for anything is always a soft, flowy tee and leggings. It's so comfy and easy to throw on! However, I don't want to look like a total slob if I need to go to the grocery store or run errands on my days off. The athleisure look is certainly trendy right now, so it's not uncommon for women to sport this look outside of the house or the gym. However, there was definitely a time when I felt like even though I was wearing virtually the same outfit as the women next to me in the Target check out line, I felt largely under dressed. Can you relate?

I found that there are certain elements of wearing an athleisure look that can ultimately dictate whether you look like you just rolled out of bed or actually pulled yourself together and are just living your best legging-season life. I want to share that revelation with you guys - 5 tips for looking put together in a t-shirt and leggings!

1. Invest in what you wear - I came to this conclusion when I was in college and wore the leggings/t-shirt uniform to class if the temperature was anything less than 60 degrees. Sure, you can purchase a cheap pair of leggings for 10.99, but if you wear them very often, those leggings are going to wear out quickly. After repeated washes, they can often be see-through (yikes) or start to lose their elasticity and you'll end up either looking unkempt or having to repurchase those same leggings over and over again. To avoid all of the above, I found that purchasing a pair of sturdy leggings that will stand up to repeated use and washes is so worth it! Thicker, better quality leggings not only look more polished, but will save you money in the long run. Bonus: I would encourage always washing your leggings on delicate cycle and hanging them to dry to preserve the life of them, whether the care instructions recommend this or not!

My favorite leggings are Zella brand. I would say the quality of these leggings is on par with Lululemon, but the price is about half! Still might be a little more investment than you would normally want to pay, but oh so worth it. I promise! I love these Live In High Waist Leggings.

2. Check your shoes - I truly believe that shoes can make or break an outfit. No matter what outfit it may be! It may sound silly, but I honestly have a different set of sneakers for the gym and outdoor activities, and every day wear. That way, the ones I run around town in aren’t dingy from gym wear or dirty from our hike last weekend! My casual wear sneakers are gray and white so they can go with pretty much any outfit I wear and won’t clash. It is definitely not necessary to have several pairs of sneakers if you don't see the need; just make sure the ones you're putting on are clean and coordinate with your outfit - this will elevate the style of your casual ensemble more than you would realize! A few of my favorite sneakers are these by Adidas and these by Nike.

3. Take five - As I touched on in the intro, for me, the entire point of athleisure is to be comfortable while still looking neat and polished. Taking an extra few minutes to tame your mane and complete a quick make up routine goes a long way. I think every woman should have a good 5 minute make-up routine down pat - something quick, easy, and practiced. Just figure out what products you need to achieve a slightly more "put together version of you."

4. It's all in the details - Accessories are your friend. This is what will make your outfit look chic enough for lunch with friends rather than just an outfit you would wear to the gym. Dainty jewelry is one of my favorite ways to accessorize; my go-to combo includes gold hoops, a delicate necklace, and a bracelet stack! Cute sunglasses are always a good option. A bandanna around your neck or tied in your hair is super cute and on-trend. Little touches like this are a simple, quick way to elevate your look. 5. Layer it on - Layers are a great way to polish off an athleisure look. I love doing this with a denim jacket, over-sized plaid shirt, or casual cardigan - especially during fall and winter! Adding an extra dimension of visual interest is just one more thing that will bring your outfit a step up from gym wear to street wear. It’s it’s too hot for a jacket, you can always tie the layer around your waist instead of actually wearing it. This gives an added bonus of defining your waist (always a good thing) while still giving the look a laid back, streetwear vibe.
